Japanese text

My belief is that the concept of sensai, shared across all the traditional creative fields of Japan, cannot be understood by Western Modernist thinking.

What, then, is this notion that cannot be grasped by rationalism, that is, by the source terminology of Western Modernism?
It was once held that a state had a tree-like structure, with the king at the top, and that so too, a city formed a tree, with individual buildings subordinate to the metropolis as a whole, interior spaces defined by reference to their exteriors, and fixtures and furniture subsumed by the given interior space.

However, Japanese architecture lacks the sense of hierarchy found in Western architecture, and building and furniture are considered equals. By extension, on all parts of a building can be considered items of furniture.
